Ordering the right amount of tile saves a second trip and makes sure every tile comes from the same batch. Here's the method we use on jobs around Perth.
1. Measure the area in square metres
Measure the length and width of each floor or wall in metres and multiply them. For an L-shaped room, split it into rectangles and add them together. Take out large areas you won't tile, like a built-in bath or cabinetry, but don't subtract small things like a floor waste.
Example: a bathroom floor 2.4 m × 1.8 m = 4.32 m².
2. Add an allowance for cuts and breakages
- 10% for a simple straight-lay floor or wall.
- 15% for rooms with lots of corners, niches or penetrations.
- 20% for herringbone, diagonal layouts and large-format tiles where offcuts can't be reused.
Our 4.32 m² bathroom with a straight lay needs 4.32 × 1.10 = about 4.75 m².
3. Round up to full boxes
Our tiles are sold per square metre to the nearest full box, and each product page shows the box coverage. If a box covers 1.44 m², 4.75 m² means 4 boxes (5.76 m²).
4. Keep a few spares
Keep a handful of leftover tiles after the job. Shades vary between production batches, so spares from the same batch make future repairs invisible.
