Slip Ratings Explained: Choosing Anti-Slip Tiles for Perth Bathrooms

A wet bathroom floor is one of the most common places to slip at home. That's why the slip rating matters as much as the colour when you choose floor tiles.

What the P rating means

In Australia, tiles are tested for slip resistance under AS 4586 and given a P rating, from P0 (very low) to P5 (very high). The test uses a pendulum that swings across a wet tile to measure grip.

What the R rating means

You'll also see R ratings (R9 to R13). This is a European ramp test, done with a person walking in work boots on an oiled, tilting surface. Many tiles list both, like our Time Stone Moon, which is rated P4/R11.

What rating does a bathroom need?

Standards Australia's handbook HB 198:2014 recommends at least P3 for residential bathroom floors and shower recesses. Higher ratings suit areas that stay wet longer or get more foot traffic, like outdoor alfrescos and pool surrounds.

The trade-off

Higher-grip tiles have more surface texture, so they can take a little more effort to clean. A matt P3 or P4 tile is a good balance for most Perth bathrooms. Keep gloss and polished tiles for walls.
