Roberts Designs 20mm Square Open Cell Backer Rod fills deep movement and expansion joints before sealing, so the sealant goes on at the right depth and does not bond to the base of the joint. It comes in 2.15m lengths that are easy to handle on the floor.
Use it for
- Expansion joints in large tiled floors, external paving and balconies
- Movement joints in tile beds and screeds
- Deep perimeter joints behind trims and skirting

Good to know
- Open cell foam is compressible, so it packs tight into a 20mm or slightly smaller joint.
- Set the rod so the sealant depth is about half the joint width, then gun sealant over it. Open cell rod suits hybrid sealants that cure with moisture.
- For narrow wet area joints, use the round closed cell rods (6mm RDX2300 or 10mm RDX2303).

How much tile should I order?
Measure the area in square metres and add 10% for cuts and breakages (15–20% for herringbone or diagonal layouts). Every tile page has a calculator that sets the quantity for you.
Can I pick up my order?
Yes. Choose pickup at checkout. Wait until we tell you your order is ready, then book a pickup time and bring your order number.
Can I return something?
Change-of-mind returns are accepted within 30 days for unused products in original packaging. A 15% restocking fee applies. Faulty or damaged items are covered under the Australian Consumer Law. See our Refund Policy.
